Each week, Child & Family Connections hosts a Parent Support Group (PSG) for parents with a mental illness, the first of its kind in the United States. Many parents do not have access other services due to disability, scarcity of in-person services, lack of transportation, childcare issues, or simply prefer the comfort of their own home. PSG is open to any parent with a mental illness, participation is always free as is the toll-free phone number, no registration is required, and parents can call as frequently or infrequently as they choose. No Registration is required. Just Call or Log on!
Callers include both first-time and experienced parents, single parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, and grandparents. Some have young children at home and others have adult children who live on their own. They join us from many different locations.
What makes PSG special is Elizabeth, who has hosted the group for many years. She has “lived experience” herself and is the mother of three wonderful children. Elizabeth helps new callers feel welcome and anxious callers find calm. She gently guides the discussion in a healing and supportive direction, with a people-first approach, centered on recovery.
For many parents, PSG becomes a central part of their mental health support system. Whatever their backgrounds, they are unified by their love for their families and their desire to build happy and healthy lives.
