Webinar: Building Family Bonds
Webinar Meeting Description: Join DBSA and Evan Kaplan (FREE) from Child and Family Connections for a conversation about talking to children about parental mental health.
At Child and Family Connections, we are parents who live with a mental health challenge. Despite our best intentions, our mental health effects our family and our children. Due to feelings of guilt, shame, or inadequacy we are afraid to or don’t know what to say, so we rarely, if ever, talk about it. When we remain silent, our children may be fearful, resentful, and self-blaming. Talking about parental mental health with our children strengthens family relationships and builds trust and resiliency. In this webinar, Building Family Bonds, we will teach you how. We will touch upon ways a parent can communicate with a child who has a mental health condition as well.
Webinar: Wednesday July 19 from 8 p.m. until 9 p.m.
About our Guest Speaker: Evan Kaplan, Executive Director of Child and Family Connections
When nine-year-old Charlotte asked to meet other kids who have a parent with a mental health condition, it was a milestone in a journey that began a decade earlier with her father’s institutionalization, destitution, and near-death from his bipolar disorder. Evan and his daughter co-founded Child & Family Connections, Inc. (CFC), the first nonprofit dedicated exclusively to parental mental illness. CFC improves the lives of families living with parental mental illness in meaningful ways—through peer-informed education, advocacy, and support.
Evan is a frequent speaker at conferences, in classrooms, and at community events. Evan and Charlotte are the recipients of the Devereux Community of Hope Award. He is a graduate of the Executive Leadership Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, a graduate of Bryn Mawr College’s Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute, and a Certified Peer Specialist. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in English from the Pennsylvania State University.
